Teak is a type of hardwood from a species of trees that belong in the Lamiaceae family. The wood is very durable that’s why it is often used to make outdoor furniture! And if you are investing on patio furniture, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better material than teak! In today’s post, we are listing down reasons why teak makes the best material for patio furniture.

Weather-Proof

With proper care, teak patio furniture will last you decades of use. The material is perfect for homes that are often exposed to moisture. The fibers of teak hardwood are very compact. So compact that water cannot penetrate it. That’s why teak is the material of choice for cutting board, countertops, floors, and yes, patio furniture. Apart from being resistant to moisture, this timber can take everyday wear and tear very well. Teak is extremely resistant to oil, mold, mildew and termites. All these adds to the overall lengthy lifespan of teak patio furniture. Simply put, teak is an excellent, all-weather material that can stand up against most types of climates better than other wood.

Low Maintenance

Most wooden materials require constant care to protect them from the elements and keep them pristine for years to come. Why? Most types of wood are prone to discoloration. If you don’t apply oil or buff the surface of the wood every week or month, the finish will become dull.

Don’t expect to baby teak wood, though. This hardwearing material is extremely durable and low maintenance.  Teak has a natural golden blond finish. But over time, the color of the wood will turn a beautiful ash gray. The changes in the wood’s coloring are natural and the quality of the wood is not affected at all. You can preserve the wood’s golden blond color by simply applying a wood sealer every year. And when it comes to cleaning the wood, it only takes a little wash of soapy water!

Sustainability

Teak happens to be one of the most eco-friendly wooden materials there are. The material is sustainable because it is hard-wearing and durable. Because it is virtually weatherproof, teak furniture will last decades of use. This reduces the demand for the material. Although teak is linked to deforestation in Burma, the government has taken many steps to control plantations. Teak from Indonesia and India are some of the oldest because the trees reach their maturation before being cut down into timber. This adds to the sustainability of teak.

Does not Retain Heat

Teak is the perfect material for outdoor furniture because it does not insulate heat at all. So the surface of the furniture remains cool despite direct exposure to sunlight. The wood will not turn cold during the winter season. The material is also resistant to temperature changes unlike meal or other types of wood. This one quality makes teak unique from other types of wooden material. Natural teak furniture can be expensive but the material is free from compounds that pollute the water, air, or soil.
