Ready for a change? The right furniture can breathe life back to drab, dull living spaces. Key pieces of furniture can improve the look and feel of a living area. Shopping for furniture is certainly exciting but it can be stressful if you’re working on a limited budget.

One thing to remember when shopping for furniture is to choose quality over price. You might think you’re saving money now, but you’ll end up losing more when that cheap couch starts breaking down months after you bought it. To help you save more money as you shop for quality furniture, consider these practical tips:

Wait for Warehouse Sales

Shopping is fun when everything’s on sale. Here’s the deal, most retailers offer furniture at inflated rates. They will keep the prices up to make up for the overhead costs of keeping the pieces. But once or several times per year, retailers hold warehouse sales to refresh their furniture lineup. Take advantage of the sale. Usually, warehouse sales are held from April to October. So hold on to your hard-earned cash until these months. Some retailers offer flash sales on special holidays too. Labor day or Independence day sales will save you at least 50% off the usual rates of selected furniture.

Don’t Go for Branded Furniture

Most shoppers go for furniture from brands that they recognize. And there’s nothing wrong with that unless you are willing to pay more on branded products. There could be thousands of lesser-known furniture brands that offer better quality and rates than branded furniture. So never limit your choices to branded furniture.

For example, an original Philippe Starck ghost chair will set you back $410 but a quality knockoff only costs a fraction of that. This is not to say that you should settle for knock-offs. The fact remains that lesser known brands do not mean lesser quality. It’s all about making better choices and getting more out of your dollar.

Shop Online

Here’s another reason why you should start shopping online: buying furniture over the ‘net is cheaper than getting it from a retail store. Again, most retail stores add overhead costs to the ballooning furniture rates. Most online retailers offer free shipping, online discounts and other money-saving incentives that average retailers do not offer.

That’s because most online retailers have warehouses in good locations or they ship directly from the factory. This allows the online retailers to cut back on the overall cost of the product. However, do note that prices between furniture and incentives will vary from online stores to online stores. Our advice is to compare prices, features and quality side by side before making a decision.

Going for Neutral Tones

Ever wonder why certain furniture is cheaper in a certain color? Why is neutral furnishing cheaper than items in bolder colors? This has something to do with the demand for a certain color.

For example, beige, orange or tan colored furniture are cheaper because most people prefer black, midnight blue or other bold-colored pieces. As the color becomes bolder, the price shoots up. Neutrals are cheaper to make too so manufacturers make more of them.

If say, you have your heart sold on an accent chair but it’s too expensive, our advice is to get it in neutral tones and adding a décor in the color that you like. You can use the décor as an accent instead of the couch, saving you hundreds of dollars.
