How to Neutralize Fishy Odors in the Home?

No matter how beautiful a home is – if it stinks – it will turn people off. Most times, unpleasant smell comes from cooking odors. For instance, cooking fish could offset a persistent odor that sticks to clothing and on furniture. It lingers all around the house and beyond for hours. Cooking fish leaves a bad smell because of certain enzymes that interact in the cooking process. The good news is, there are ways to neutralize the odor and keep the home smelling fresh and clean. Before cooking, you want to open all windows and vents. Keep the door open too for good measure. This will help increase air circulation in the kitchen. Bad smell will be sucked out of the home by the breeze. You can also open fans to create strategic breeze that will carry unwanted odors out.

Coffee Grounds

If you want to eliminate fish odor and replace it with the tantalizing smell of coffee, brew a cup right now. Grinding coffee beans and brewing it will fill your home with a rich, earthy aroma. You can also ground great-smelling spices like nutmeg or cinnamon in place of coffee.

Scent Diffusers/Oil Burners

Scent diffusers or oil burners are ideal for keeping the indoor air fresh smelling! Just leave the diffuser out on the kitchen counter after cooking to eliminate unpleasant odor. The same thing goes if you use an oil burner. Just add two tablespoons of water with several drops of your favorite essential oils to the well. The heat will disperse the scent around the home.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is an effective odor eliminator! It works particularly well with fishy odors. Before cooking the fish, leave a small cup of white vinegar near the stove. The vinegar will absorb the unwanted odor. It will leave the rest of the house fresh smelling. The acidic smell of vinegar will disperse quickly in the air too.

Lemon Peels

Got several lemon peels? Don’t throw them in the bin. After cooking the fish, boil several lemon peels. You can add a couple teaspoon of lemon juice to the mix. The citrusy scent of lemon peels will neutralize the fishy odor. Leave the brew boiling for 30 minutes or until the stench disappears. If you don’t have lemon peels, grapefruit or orange peels work just as great!


Before frying the fish, slide over thin slices of apple on the frying pan. Rub the apple slices gently until the whole pan is covered with its juices. This will minimize the fish odor as you fry without leaving an apple taste to the food.

Cinnamon Sticks

Cinnamon is a great spice that counteracts fishy odors. There are two ways to eliminate unwanted odors using cinnamon sticks. One, just leave a stick in a bowl of boiling water after cooking the fish. This will neutralize fish odors. Two, you can boil the cinnamon stick together with other spices.


Charcoal is an excellent odor eliminator. It’s typically used to draw out impurities and unwanted smells. Just place a large coal near the stove after cooking the fish dish. The charcoal will soak up all the fishy smell within a few hours.
