Coming home at the end of the work week and realizing that the entire house is a mess is not how you want to start your weekend.

By doing a simple chore here or there, you will ensure that your home is a tidy space that makes you happy and embraces you each day when you walk in the door.

Home is where your heart thrives. It is a place that can envelop you and your refuge from the world’s chaos. You want your home to be inspiring and warm.

Here are 7 ways to keep your home clean:

  1. Toss out junk mail the minute you receive it. Don’t let it pile up. If you know it’s trash when you look at it, throw it away. Then you won’t have a table in your foyer, living room, or kitchen piled high with trash mail.
  2. Tidy up a little each day. Clean dishes, kitchen counters, stovetop, and table each evening before bed. It only takes a few minutes to pick up a piece or two of clothing lying around or do mini spurts of cleaning.
  3. Organize. Designate bins, crates, or baskets for items such as important mail, car keys, etc. The more organized you are, the easier it will be to put things in their own space and keep the house picked up and looking nice.
  4. Prioritize. Instead of spending several hours watching TV and/or surfing the Web each night after work, spend some of that time on cleaning. Whether you clean the toilet or load the dishwasher and then go back to your show or computer, you’ll have accomplished a task or two.
  5. Plan ahead. Doing simple things like laying your clothes out for the next day (for everyone in the household) can prevent tossing outfits this way and that as you try on items in the morning rush. Lunches should also be packed the evening before and, if possible, breakfast can be prepared ahead of time as well. This means dishes from preparation can be cleaned and put away before the new day begins.
  6. Reward yourself. When you’re finished cleaning, reward yourself with a few moments of relaxation with your favorite beverage, a warm bath, or a good book. You can even add a little money to a jar each time you complete a task and at the end of the week – or month – use this cash to treat yourself to a movie, your favorite takeout, a manicure, etc.
  7. Not only is clutter an eyesore, it’s a source of stress. By following these tips, your home will be cleaner and your home will be the place you can’t wait to get to after work.

You may think something as simple as picking up a couple of items each day and putting them in their rightful place is nonsense but little things add up. And Friday evening when you walk through your front door, you will be greeted by fresh and clean surroundings – instead of mountains of clutter and piles of junk mail.
